Steering Committee Member Roles and Responsibilities

General Steering Committee Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and set overall direction for priority area; lead and develop its priority area network; and, ensure that major goals and timelines are achieved through use of workgroups and task forces.
  • Facilitate innovative problem-solving and open communication across multidisciplinary members and groups; encourage relationship building across network; and, serve as sounding board for new ideas and opportunities for growth.
  • Monitor progress, which may include tracking timelines and creating and implementing evaluation procedures; assess need for changes to SMP priority area; and, report regularly to the Board and annually to members.
  • Evaluate existing work groups/committees and their respective activities in relation to the goals/objectives of the Strategic Alliances Priority Area; determine how new and existing activities will be integrated into a cohesive plan; and, make final recommendations to the Board for approval.

General Steering Committee Membership

  • NAACCR members with substantial experience in the priority area are encouraged to serve as Steering Committee Members through an open call for applications. Applications will be reviewed and Members will be appointed by the Chair(s). Steering Committee Members may also be appointed at the discretion of the Chair(s).
  • Members are asked to serve a two year term with an option to serve an additional two year term. For the first appointments only, terms may alternate between 1 and 2 years to assure committee transition.

General Steering Committee Meetings

Frequency of meetings will vary by Committee. A record of decisions and salient discussions should be kept as documentation.

General Steering Committee Report

The Steering Committee Chair and Board Liaisons will be responsible for keeping the Board of Directors informed concerning priorities, progress and evaluation of priority area matters. The group will complete annual report requirements for the membership prior to the Annual Conference.

Strategic Alliances Steering Committee

Objective: In partnership with the Board of Directors, the Strategic Alliances Steering Committee leads the overall planning, implementation, and monitoring of all tasks for the Strategic Alliances Priority Area of the NAACCR Strategic Management Plan (SMP).

Strategic Alliances Steering Committee Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities and strategies for improving relationships and scope/focus of work with existing NAACCR sponsors.
  • Using the NAACCR mission as a guide, identify opportunities and strategies for expanding NAACCR partnerships to include new entities and work activities.
  • Examine and recommend approaches to promote the NAACCR organization and activities both internally to existing members and externally.

Membership:

NAACCR President and (President-Elect/or Past President) will serve as Board Liaisons.

Meetings:

The committee will meet a minimum of once per year or as required by the Chair(s).

Communications Steering Committee

Objective: In partnership with the Board of Directors, the Communications Steering Committee leads the overall planning, implementation, and monitoring of all tasks for the SMP’s Communication Steering Committee Priority Area.

Communication Steering Committee Roles and Responsibilities

  • In partnership with Executive Director and Board works to promote and strengthen NAACCR’s brand (e.g., name recognition) through increased activities in marketing, media relations, position papers, and social media.
  • Promotes methods for NAACCR to serve as the voice for members on key issues involving central cancer registries.
  • Develops methods to effectively promote the sharing of expertise, knowledge, procedures, and best practices among NAACCR members to ensure efficiency and reduce redundancy of effort.
  • Ensures effective communication among members and timely dissemination of such information.
  • Oversees the routine communication needs of NAACCR including the editorial calendar and timely publication of the NAACCR Newsletter, edits and structural changes to the website, and active and timely participation in various social media.

Membership:

Communications Steering Committee Members should have one or more of the following skills or interests: professional editing, writing, training in communications, and knowledge of social media services.

Meetings:

The committee will meet once per month or as required by the Chair(s).

Data Use & Research Steering Committee

Objective: In partnership with the Board of Directors, the Data Use & Research Steering Committee leads the overall planning, implementation, and monitoring of all tasks for the SMP’s Data Use & Research Priority Area.

Steering Committee Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Identifies research opportunities.
  • Encourages use of NAACR data for collaborative research studies.
  • Develops the capacity of member registries to conduct research.
  • Evaluates the quality of NAACCR data and establishes fitness for use criteria.
  • Oversees the certification process and ensures integrity.
  • Advises on changes to certification methodology, process and criteria.

Meetings:

The committee will meet once per month or as required by the Chair(s).

Standardization and Registry Development Steering Committee

Objective: In partnership with the Board of Directors, the Standardization and Registry Development Steering Committee leads the overall planning, implementation, and monitoring of all tasks for the Standardization and Registry Development Priority Area.

Standardization and Registry Development Steering Committee Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Explore and implement strategies that will prepare central registries to adapt rapidly and successfully to technologically-driven changes in cancer surveillance, including advances in information systems and technology and the national adoption of electronic health records.
  • Explore and implement strategies to maintain consensus standards and best practices for cancer surveillance activities and address central registry needs for semantic interoperability and enhancements to database management systems and data transmission processes.

Meetings:

The committee will meet once per month or as required by the Chair(s).

Professional Development and Recruitment Steering Committee

Objective: In partnership with the Board of Directors, the Professional Development and Recruitment Steering Committee leads the overall planning, implementation, and monitoring of all tasks for the Professional Development and Recruitment Priority Area.

Professional Development and Recruitment Steering Committee Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities and strategies for professional development of NAACCR members; confer with members regularly about training needs for professional development; and encourage appropriate innovative training approaches.
  • Identify opportunities and strategies for expanding partnerships and collaborations with other organizations with similar interest in professional development and recruitment of cancer surveillance professionals.
  • Improve managerial, executive and scientific proficiency of members through new training programs and courses; support multidisciplinary skill development and cross training; and initiate new skill development for emerging fields.

The committee will meet once per month or as required by the Chair(s).
